Our Materials
Haiku Bags are made with recycled materials, ensuring that every handbag, tote, wallet, and crossbody is designed with an eco-conscious process that reduces waste and environmental impact. We’re giving plastic bottles a second life by turning them into beautiful bags and wallets.
Bottles to Bags
Not only are Haiku bags durable, organized, and beautiful—they also help keep plastic out of landfills. Each bag recycles an average of nine post-consumer plastic bottles.
We’ve used recycled polyester for years because it’s a durable, versatile fabric made from PET plastic—the same material used in many bottles and food containers, often marked with “PET” or the number 1 in the recycling symbol.
Once the PET is made into fabric, it can enjoy a second life as all kinds of goods—clothing, shoes, and of course, bags! We use Recycled PET for main body fabric as well as our linings; both are backed with a water-resistant coating.
Reclaimed Plastic Bottles
Since 2011, we’ve been taking post-consumer plastic bottles destined for the landfill and giving them a new purpose as the main fabric for our core collection as well as all of our linings.
Collected and Processed
The bottles are sorted and washed. Once dry, they get crushed into tiny flakes, which are melted into smaller, denser pellets. These pellets are extruded into polyester fibers that are then woven into durable, eco-friendly fabric.
Upcycled Into Bags
This is when the magic happens: our durable, recycled polyester fabric is sewn into unique bags and accessories that are as functional as they are stylish.
